Water Sampling

Water sampling at the outer harbour - As part of the feasibility study we have been taking water samples from the outer harbour on a regular basis over the last few months. We will be continuing to take samples for a further 3 months. We have varied the tide times and sea conditions when samples are taken, through autumn, winter and now Spring. It is important to note the conditions when samples are taken because poor weather conditions can have adverse effects on the water quality. (It should be noted that SEPA do not recommend swimming within 2 days of heavy rain/storm conditions).

We are analysing samples for E.coli/ Enterococci and Hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are not a normal thing for sea water to be assessed for but as we are near the harbour there was concern as to the impact of all the marine vessels on the water quality.

The legally defined bathing water season for those beaches that are designated for safe swimming, runs from 1st June to 15th September, so far, all samples have been taken out with the season.  But as we will be hoping that the pool would allow year-round swimming the legal definition isn’t relevant to us.

All water analysis has been carried out by the James Hutton Institute, note sample results are a single indication of water quality at the moment the sample was taken.

Since we began sampling, we have realised we need to ensure we are taking samples at the right times. Therefore, we have approached SEPA for additional advice, and have discussed sampling with the architect. Once we have additional information, we will post here.
